The US Open is an important tennis tournament held annually in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens, New York City, the largest of the four Grand Slam tournaments. The tournament is usually held from late August to early September. The US Open is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. It was first held in 1881, making it the oldest major tennis championship in the world.

The US Open is the second most prestigious event after Wimbledon. The first open tournament was staged in 1881 in Newport, Rhode Island, and the US Open is the only Grand Slam event that has remained in the same city throughout its history.

The tournament consists of five main championships: men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The tournament also includes events for seniors, juniors, and wheelchair players. Since 1978, the tournament has been played on acrylic hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens, New York City.

  • 3 players from USA-Richard Sears, William Larned, and Bill Tiden are 7 times record holders in the men’s singles championship.
  • Richard Sears won 7 consecutive times singles championships (1881-1887) in the Pre-open era and Roger Federer of Switzerland won 5 consecutive times the Singles championship (2004-2008) in the Open era.
  • In the first 45 years only once (Laurence Doherty of GBR in 1903) non-Americans win the singles title of the US Open.
  • 85 out of 141 times American players have won US Open.

US Open 2023 Results

In singles championship, Serbian star Novak Djokovic defeated 2021 US Open Champion Daniil Medvedev in straight sets 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. Novak Djokovic wins record 24 Grand Slams now more than any ATP Players and equal to WTA player Margaret Court.

In the Men’s Doubles championship, American Rajeev Ram and Britain’s Joe Salisbury strike from a set down to beat India’s Rohan Bopanna and Australian Matthew Ebden 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to win an Open-era record third straight US Open men’s doubles title.

In the Mixed Doubles championship, Russian-Kazakhstani tennis star Anna Danilina & Finland star Harri Heliovaara took the first taste of Grand Slam glory in their career. Champions defeated top-seed American pair Jessica Pegula and Austin Krajicek in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

US Open 2022 Champions

After a Successful and suspenseful event, Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz defeated Casper Ruud in the 2022 US Open men’s singles final to earn his first Grand Slam title. 19 years old Carlos also booked his place in the number 1 spot in the ranking. Carlos Alcaraz defeated Casper Ruud in the final with 6–4, 2–6, 7–6(7–1), 6–3

In the doubles championship, Defending champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury defeated Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski in the final, 7–6, 7–5 to win the men’s doubles tennis title at the 2022 US Open. They became the second team in the Open Era to defend the US Open title, after Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 1996..

In US OPEN 2022 mixed championship, Australians Storm Sanders and John Peers defeated Belgian Kirsten Flipkens and Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin to win the 2022 US Open mixed doubles title in a match tiebreak. Storm Sanders and John Peers won final with 4–6, 6–4, [10–7]

2021 Results

In 2021,  Daniil Medvedev of Russia won the singles championship. Medvedev played the final against Noval Djokovic and defeated him in straight sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-4).  Daniil Medvedev became 1st Russian player to win the US open in the history of the US Open Grand Slam. In doubles championship, Rajeev Ram of USA and Joe Salisbury of GBR defeated Jamie Murray of GBR and Bruno Soares of Brazil in 2021 double championship. The winning pair won the final in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-2).Whereas in the Mixed Doubles championship, Desirae Krawczyk of USA and Joe Salisbury of GBR defeated Giuliana of Mexico and Marcelo Arevalo of Israel with straight sets (7-5, 6-2). Joe Salisbury of GBR won both men’s doubles and Mixed doubles titles in 2021.

US Open Tennis History and Winners

The US Open is the only Grand Slam event that has remained in the same city throughout its history. But had different courts in the history of the US open. The tournament was first held in August 1881 on grass courts at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island, which is now home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. US open is the only grand slam that has been played on Grass court (1881-1974), clay court (1975- 1977) and hard court (1978-present).

US Open 2023 Prize Money

The 2023 US Open’s overall player compensation will total $65 million, a new all-time high for the tournament. 2023 total prize money is 8% more than the 2022 edition. Singles champion will have $3 mil while doubles champion will have $700,000.

In 2022, the total prize money of US Open will be $60 million first time in history. The winner of the Singles champion got $2.6 million with 2000 ranking points and runner up will receive $1.3 million with 1200 ranking points. In doubles championship, Winning team will get a cheque for $688,000 with 2000 ranking points and the runner-up team will have $344,000 with 1200 ranking points. While in Mixed doubles championship, the Title holder will have $170,000 with them and $82,000 will go to the runner-up team.

  • Women’s doubles: 64 pairs, including up to seven wildcards.
  • Mixed doubles: 32 pairs, including up to eight wildcards.
  • Wheelchair singles: 8 competitors, including one wildcard.
  • Quad wheelchair singles: 4 competitors, round-robin competition.
  • Quad wheelchair doubles 2 teams.
