ATP Hamburg European Open History and Winners
The first edition of the tournament was held at the ‘Eisenbahnverein auf der Uhlenhorst’ and followed a best-of-three-sets format. From 1893 to 2007, it was best-of-five sets, then reverted to best-of-three sets for the final. The tournament was initially restricted to German and Austrian players from 1892 to 1896.
In 1924, the event moved to its current location in Am Rothenbaum. Until 1979, it included both men’s and women’s tournaments, but the women’s event relocated to West Berlin. From 1971 to 1989, it was part of the Grand Prix Tour, and from 1990 to 2008, it was an ATP Masters Series event. Since 2009, it has been an ATP Tour 500 event, which affected its ability to attract top-ranked players. Despite its appeal on slower surfaces, many prioritize preparations for the US Open as it falls after Wimbledon.
This tournament falls into different categories previously like ATP Super 9 (1990–1999), ATP Masters Series (2000–2008), and ATP Tour 500 (since 2009).

The tournament has been won by many famous players including Bill Tilden, Henri Cochet, Jack Crawford, Gustav Adolf von Zangerl, Max Decugis, Andrés Gimeno, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Marat Safin, Lleyton Hewitt, Justine Henin, Roger Federer, Tommy Haas, Radek Štěpánek, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal.
