Dubai Tennis Championships History and Previous Winners
History
The Dubai Tennis Championships recently celebrated its 30th year anniversary on the ATP Tour. Its inaugural edition was first held in 1993 at the Aviation Club. Back then, the Club didn’t have a proper tennis court so a temporary setup was used. The tournament began as an ATP 250 event and it wasn’t until 2001 that the event was upgraded to become an ATP 500 series tournament. Since the beginning, the Dubai Tennis Championship has been held under the patronage of the ruler of Dubai, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE; Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Though the Dubai Tennis Championships have found a permanent home at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre and been instrumental in improving the local infrastructure, a Dubai tennis event was held prior as well. Before the 1990s, a Dubai tennis event was held in the British Embassy before it was succeeded by the Tennis Championships.
