BNP Paribas Open Tennis Tournament
The Indian Wells Masters, also known as the BNP Paribas Open is an annual outdoor hardcourt tournament set in Indian Wells, California, USA. As a WTA and ATP-sanctioned event, the event is part of the WTA 1000 and ATP Masters 1000 series of events respectively, the latter of which is the highest rank of ATP events behind the Grand Slam tournaments. It is the first of 9 of these tournaments and it will be held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. This year will mark the 49th edition of the event.
The Indian Wells in particular is the prime Masters 1000 event with viewership rivaling that of the Grand Slam events. Indian Wells Masters 2023 Results
The BNP Paribas Open goes to Carlos Alcaraz, the first ATP Masters 1000 of the season which took place on hard courts in Indian Wells, California. The Spanish baby, seeded number 1, scrambles in the final in just 70 minutes of play, with a score of 6-3 6-2, the Russian Daniil Medvedev, fifth force of the seeding, thus returning to the lead of the ATP ranking and overtaking the absent Novak Djokovic. For the Spaniard it is the third Masters 1000 title of his career after Miami and Madrid 2022. And he is also the youngest tennis player in history to have hit the Sunshine Double, Indian Wells-Miami pairing in his career.
In the doubles, Rohan Bopanna and Matt Ebden won Indian Wells doubles title. India’s Rohan Bopanna became the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion when he and Australia’s Matt Ebden claimed the men’s doubles crown at the BNP Paribas Open here. Winning pair defeated Neal Skupski and Wesley Koolhof in tie breaker (6-3 2-6 10-8).
Indian Wells History and Previous Winners
History
The Indian Wells Masters started out as a non-tour tennis event in 1974 called the American Airlines Tennis Games. It was founded by former tennis players Charlie Pasarell and Raymond Moore. It would go on to become part of the Grand Prix Tennis Tour and the ATP Tour in 1989. This was also the year a woman’s event was held alongside the ATP event for the first time. Since then, the tournament has gone by many names like the Pacific Life Open, the Tennis Masters Series, The Evert Cup, etc. Given its massive popularity, the tournament was given a 96-player field alongside the Miami Open. Their unique grandness even among the Masters events got them the nickname “Grand Slam of the West”. In terms of recent changes, the Indian Wells Masters was one of the many tournaments there canceled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
