History

The Hong Kong Open (Salem Open) was a men’s tennis tournament on the Grand Prix tour (1973–1987) and ATP Tour (1990–2002). Held at Victoria Park Tennis Centre, Michael Chang won three titles.

In 2001, the Hong Kong Open controversially incorporated the Perrier logo amid tobacco sponsorship restrictions. The men’s event was replaced in 2003, while a women’s competition, honored as the WTA International Tournament of the Year in 2018, resumed in 2014 sponsored by Prudential.

After the 2018 edition, the organizers canceled the Hong Kong Open for four years due to the 2019–20 protests, the COVID-19 pandemic, and concerns over the safety of Peng Shuai. In 2023, the WTA returned, and in January 2024, the men’s tournament will resume in Hong Kong with over $650,000 in prize money, serving as a crucial stop for players heading to the Australian Open.

The tournament has retained its ATP250 tour category and to date, all of the singles champions have either been or gone on to be ranked world no. 1. The biggest example of this is Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.
