Open 13 Provence Tennis Tournament

The Open 13 Provence also known as Marseille Open is an annual indoor hard-court tournament set in Marseille, France. As an ATP-sanctioned event, the competition is part of the ATP 250 series of events. The tournament is venue at the Palais des sports de Marseille and it is one of 5 ATP tournaments held in architecturally beautiful France. This year will mark the 31st edition of the event. Its name comes from the INSEE code of the Bouches-de-Rhone department which Marseille is the capital of. The title sponsor for the event is the Bouches-de-Rhone department also called Department 13.

Open 13 Provence History and Previous Winners

History

The Open 13 has always been one of the most significant ATP 250 events on the Tour since all the way back in 1993 when the inaugural edition was held. The tournament was a byproduct of former professional tennis player Jean-Francois Caujolle and his efforts to hold a tennis competition in his hometown of Marseille. He remains the event director to this day. The tournament is also significant for other reasons. It was the scene for Roger Federer’s first ever ATP Final before he became the Big Three founding member and tennis icon he is today.

Including Roger Federer, former world no. 1s, and, Grand Slam champions like Andy Murray, Juan Martin del Potro, Boris Becker, and others who have not only played at Marseille but also gone on to become titlist. Among recent champions, Stefanos Tsitsipas comes to mind who won 2 consecutive titles in 2019 and 2020, an Open 13 record.

Open 13 Provence 2023 Players List

Not only are 2 Top 10 players from ATP Rankings set to play at Marseille, but 6 former Top 10 will also be present. Holger Rune headlines the singles category as world no.9. The ATP Newcomer of the Year has been climbing the ranks swiftly, especially after his Paris Masters victory over Novak Djokovic. Following him, world no. 10 Hubert Hurkacz will be making his third Open 13 appearance, adding diversity between new and familiar faces. Notable faces like former no. 3 Grigor Dimitrov and former no. 9 Jannik Sinner are also top seeds.

Even 3-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka has received a wild card entry to participate in the event. Among French nationals, home favorites Gael Monfils and the current no. 1 French player Richard Gasquet are major contenders for the title.
