Madrid Open, which is also known as Mutua Madrid Open due to sponsorship, was held in Madrid in early May. Madrid Masters played on the outdoor red Clay surface of Caja Magica, Spain Madrid since 2009.

Before 2009 it was played indoor hard court surface of Madrid Arena. Madrid Open was founded in 2002. In 2012, the event was played on the blue court for a visual experiment but it wasn’t continued after some top players refused to play on it and the tournament returned to the traditional red clay.

20th ATP 1000 Madrid Open will start from 1 May 2022 to the 8th of May 2022. In the 2022 edition, the draw will be like 64 singles and 32 Doubles. The venue of the Madrid Open will be Park Manzanares of Madrid, Spain. The winner will get 1000 rating points with the runner-up’s 600 points.

Mutua Madrid Open Champions

In 2021, the Singles champion was Alexander Zverev of Germany. Zverev won the final against Italian star Matteo Berrettini by 6-7, 6-4, and 6-3.

On another side, in doubles, Marcel Granollers of Spain and Horacio Zaballos of Argentina won the doubles champion crown against Croatian pair Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic.

Spanish player Rafael Nadal has a record of 5 times Singles champion in total 8 finals.  In doubles, American brothers Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan have a record of 5 times championships in total 7 finals. Roger Federer is the only player to win on all three surfaces of the Mutua Madrid Open (hard court 2006, red clay 2009, blue clay 2012).

Mutua Madrid Open 2022 Prize Money

In 2022, Prize money will be €6,744,165 however total financial commitment will be €7,499,290. In 2021 prize money was too low due to the covid which was €3,226,325, where the winner of the singles got €315,160 and the winner of doubles got €62,760.  While from 2016 to 2019 total prize money was €6,536,160.
